Life has gotten in the way again of my goals. I’ve had two days without the gym now and I know to most of you that sounds like nothing, but for me to stay focused I have to stay consistent. I can’t go off track even a little, and sometimes I’m just going to have to admit defeat in that area from time to time. Monday I had a birthday party to go to, and by the time we got home and put Julia to bed I was so tired I fell asleep on the couch until midnight. Since I had made it to the gym Sunday I didn’t feel super horrible, but I did miss a day of my 30 day challenge. That gave me some guilt. Then came Tuesday, and I had some out of the house work to do (babysitting) all day and had a very frustrating time attempting to get Julia to take a nap in a place other then her own bed. (Took all my energy!) So, by the time I was headed home I was so mentally fatigued that I could barely talk. My amazingly loving husband was fabulous – he made dinner, took care of clean-up, let me fall asleep off and on all night long, and even gave Julia her bath and did most of the bed time routine. Again, I missed the gym and my 30 day challenge. I was so drained I couldn’t even find the energy to stretch! I went to bed early, slept the entire night, woke feeling rested for the most part, and am ready to find the strength today. For the days that are hard I’m really going to have to dig a lot deeper into my soul and faith to know that even when it’s hard I have the ability to succeed. I think one of my major road blocks in life has been not allowing me to see this. So, today is Zumba night and I will go and work my butt off, come home and do my 30 day challenge, and pass out from even more exhaustion. And, it will all be worth it in the end!
A Side note – I have my Biggest Loser Weigh in and body comp test on Friday at 12:30. More details on this to come.
Welcome to defeating my weight blog. I have been writing the daily obstacles of my weight lose here for a year now to maintain my goals and to keep myself honest and focused on my journey.

Best of #8 - from the beginning
Here's my post from the beginning of my journey. I began by using the Wii's EA Active 30 day Challenge, and am currently doing the same workout (at the highest difficulty level now) again to see how much better I can do it. The leg strap still does not completely fit my leg, but it's so close I almost won't need the extension strap soon! This beginning post was the momentum I needed to make a change in myself - I can hear how scared and anxious I was about making change in myself, and today I have the courage and strength to keep going and fight through the nerves. I hope those of you with a Wii and no gym membership can really relate to this - having just the moderate activity that it gives you is such a great start to your new life!

The Program
Well, it’s the beginning of the week tomorrow. Yes, I start weeks on Monday. I have 5 days left before the mission begins. For Christmas my mom gave me the Wii EA Active 30 day challenge game. It’s basically a more advanced wii fit. I haven’t used it yet, but I have thoroughly read the manual, and of course my thighs are too large for the absurdly small leg strap that holds the num-chuck controller. Ok, side note, if you are reading this and you have never heard of the Nintendo Wii and or never used one you are severally lacking in experiences with technology. To learn more about the Nintendo Wii, click here.
So, the plan that I have half heartedly thought out is to get up at the insane hour of 6:00 am after Jon has fed Julia and put her back to bed. This of course doesn’t always go smoothly, and I will have to see how long this schedule will hold up with the recent refusal of nap times from my darling daughter. After dragging, hauling, and physically yanking myself down the stairs and pouring a gallon of coffee down my throat I will unhurriedly motivate myself into beginning the 30 day challenge with my Wii Fit. I also plan to get outside on the dry days and take walks with Julia, adding to the more physical lifestyle I’m attempting to have. Saturdays I may drive into Portland as well to walk dogs and Julia with my mom (gas money providing).
On top of this drastic change in my daily schedule I will begin to change my eating habits. The first few days may not be as structured and cleansing as I would have hoped for. (Grocery shopping occurs after pay day, the 5th of each month.) So, I will have to work with what I have in the house. Meaning of course I have to work on getting all the detrimental cuisines (i.e. chocolate, bacon, and soda) out of the house away from harms way (my butt).
I am scared, nervous, excited, and very pessimistic about the endeavor I am about to embark upon. I have little will power and a lack of support going into this. Not that people aren’t there to tell me good job and agree with what I’m doing, but most people find out your on a diet in the middle of eating a cheeseburger in front of you. Or any other craving I may be having at the time. My amazing and loving husband supports and encouraged me with everything I do, but at times it’s from the couch with a can of Coke in his hands. My other fantastic supporter is my mother, and she is also beginning a more active lifestyle again, but her schedule doesn’t always give way to face time.
2010 here I come with a declaration of change! I do not sit here announcing no more junk food, but stating that I am making an effort to become a healthy and more active person. I am going to make the move towards moderation of the delectable, and a step away from the fatty, salt loaded fast foods.

Quick Check in for the night
I feel amazing and exptreamly tired all at the same time. It's been a rough couple of days with some major changes going on with my kido, and trying to fit in all the extra working out I'm attempting to get in. Last night I had no exercise, but lots of stress with a salad. haha. Tonight though I made it to the gym, did about an hour of cardio and ab exercise, came home to put the munchkin to bed, and then did my 35 minutes of EA Active 30 day Challenge on my Wii. Tonight's workout consited of 35 minutes on the Eliptical and then 15 minutes of stretching and sit-ups on the balance ball. On the Wii was upper body workout, mostly focusing on the shoulders and back. I'm feeling great, and have been making sure to include salads and more fruits into my meals.

A New Year = New Goals
Alright people, let’s hear it for 2010 and start off fresh with 2011. I’ve been making it to the gym this past week several times now, and have really missed it. With working part time during the holidays and all the other events going on I had no time left over for myself, let alone the gym. I am back in full force and will start a new adventure soon with The Biggest Loser Contest at my gym. This week I will register for the contest and the following week I will do my weigh in and body composition test. The results and winners are judged on highest % of weight loss and/or highest % of body fat lost in both a men and women's category. So, there will be 2 chances for me to win. I sure wish I had a financial sponsor for this, but I will have to lay down $99 for this whole thing. If I win, there’s no lose for me really, but it will put a burden on our finances this month. Jon and I are prepared to work around that. So, here’s a quick run down of my current weight, some thoughts on goals and workouts, and for the next week I will be re-posting some of my favorite posts from 2010 and then we will get into the contest!
My current weight is 266.6 and I can certainly tell you I am not excited about that number, but I am glad to see that by only indulging myself once in awhile during the past month I did alright about not gaining weight. My goals are large and will need a lot of focus from me to accomplish, but with some accountability partners (you readers), my family, and my drive I will do it!
Goal 1: Compete in the Biggest Loser contest at my gym. I would really like to put win as part of the goal, but would need to really size up the competition first. The contest runs into March, so this will be a good long term focus for me.
Goal 2: Complete 30 day Challenge on EA Active Wii Fit game. I started this again to see how well I do now that have lost weight and have a full year of exercise in my system. When I started this journey, the EA Active was all I had to get me started. I felt like it gave me a great starting point then, and it will give me another avenue of exercise this time around too. I began on the 1st and will finish the challenge in 30 days. The program consists of 2 days on and 1 day off of exercise, so some days I will do the Wii and the gym depending on what’s going on. So far I have really enjoyed the muscles that are being worked again – I had mostly been focusing on cardio lately and not strength building, so this is a nice variation to my workouts.
Goal 3: Zumba class! My gym is now offering Zumba fitness classes and I am interested in seeing how this class works. A lot of my friends have been working out with Zumba for awhile and have seen great results with it. They also say it’s challenging at first, but very rewarding and fun at the same time. The class is offered at 6:30-7:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, so this will correspond with a lot of things and I will have to work out lives around trying to go to this class.
Goal 4: Lose 30 pounds by April 1! Wow, that’s a deadline that is looming close. I’m only giving myself 3 whole months to shed the weight. Why you ask, well that would be a couple of weeks after the biggest loser contest, but I really just want to have a deadline. I don’t want to keep telling people around spring time or early summer. It doesn’t give me a sense of urgency or keep me on track if I just throw out a time period that is ambiguous. So, that’s 10 pounds a month or 2.5 pounds a week. I can so do that!
Goal 5: Keep a daily food log, sometimes counting calories, but without obsessing over it. Last year at this time I began a head first focus on counting my calories, and it took up a good portion of time to calculate, input, and keep track of all the calories going in me. So, I’ve made my own little journal and will write down what I’m eating and the calories if I know them. If I can see when and what I am eating in front of me I think I will have a better perspective on anything that could be hampering my weight loss.
So, there are the goals and the hard work ahead of me. I hope you will continue to join me on my journey and send encouragement my way. I will do that same for your journeys and help lead you onto a new and healthy path for your life. Happy New Year and I mean it, make it a happy one!

60 Minute Work-out!
Today is the first day of my challenge, and I have managed to get in 60 minutes of exercise! My eating though did suffer some because I made some very wonderful enchiladas. Now, these enchiladas would be very healthy for me except for the tortilla that counts as 200 calories for one serving. YICKS!
So, this afternoon I walked for 15 minutes for about half a mile. Then, in the evening time I worked out on the Wii doing Boxing. This is an intense work-out, let me tell you. I start out with a little bit of training to get my skills up, and then I go right into a match against another person whose level is slightly higher then mine. So it takes 3 matches before I can only get to a tie with this person, so then I go into pairing up against Jon for several matches. Then, we go into training again against each other. During his turns I decided to do some crunches and push-ups. So, I did 41 crunches, and then 20 push-ups. Afterwards I did some high leg lifts that work the lower abdomen, but was only able to get off about 15 of those. Now, just a side note when I was heavy into my gym routine back in the day, I was able to get in 100 crunches after a 30 min cardio work-out. Now, it’s like someone has taken my ab muscles and stretched them all out and after I do my crunches it feels like they are spasming as hard as possible. As I explained it, it was like when you laugh so hard that your stomach begins to hurt really badly and the only way to make the pain go away is stop laughing. Anyways, it was an intense work-out tonight, with a total of 45 minutes on the wii and 15 minutes of walking I managed to get in 60 minutes of exercise!
Food Log:
Breakfast: Egg & onion burrito w/ cheese – 340
Lunch: Left over pizza (1.5 slices) & spinach salad – 594
Snack: Homemade French fries- 230
Dinner: Chicken enchiladas & corn bread - 748
Snack: Cake – 243

Walking in the rain = burning calories
Today has been a very busy day, so I intend to make this short. But, I do have a fabulous post coming up for tomorrow if I can get to it. (Teaser: I had a good message at church today, and want to apply it to my weight loss and give the message to you.)
Today I took a huge walk from my house all the way to Safeway, which is longer then a mile. Now I usually take a mile walk every day that I can, but it’s always round trip, not one way. Now, I would have made the round trip back home from Safeway, but it began to rain on us and Jon got a ride from a friend to go get the car. (Can’t afford to let Julia and I get sick again.) So, next week (since this week will be rainy) I am going to attempt this round trip walk again and see how I do. The one way from our house is mostly down hill and of course easier. But, coming back in a nice sloped incline, so I think it will get me burning some serious calories.
This next week’s forecast is showing a lot of rain, so I may be doing some indoor activities and may take a trip or two to the indoor park at the mall. Now this may become a problem since we have put ourselves on a gas budget, and I can’t use more gas then I am allowed. So I will hope for some breaks in the rain in order to get our walks in.
I am also going to get back into my morning workouts with the Wii fit. Now, I’ve been reading up on obesity and sleep, and how much it can affect your weight loss when you aren’t getting enough sleep, so I may be doing my workouts during nap time instead of getting up super early with Jon before the sun rises.
Other challenge this week will include eating low calories meals, and getting Julia ready for Daylight Savings Time that begins next week. Hope everyone has a great week!
Daily Calories: 1,757 (pretty close today even with my cookies)

OUCH!
I took such a long walk today and had such a long evening that I have to take a mental health day from the Wii tonight. I usually get up in the morning and work out, but I got up this morning took my shower and was just too worn-out that I knew I wouldn’t have the impact that I could.
So, I slept in this morning and later did house work during nap time, and took an hour long walk that I estimate was almost 2 miles long. I suppose I should have gained more ground in that amount of time, but like I said my fatigue has taken over. Later in the evening Julia was on my lap wiggling around and wacked her head against my lip. All of a sudden my lip in bleeding buckets and I see in the mirror I have a split down the inside of my lip. Luckily it wasn’t deep enough to need stitches, but it was pretty swollen and a lot of blood. So, with that much stress I am making this excuse to not workout tonight.

Snack: 1 cup sliced canned pears – 180
Lunch: Left over Spaghetti – 394
Snack: Whole wheat English muffin w/ Low-Fat Peanut butter - 335

It's all about the small steps
Well today was a productive day around the house. I was able to get a lot of house work done due to having one of my girlfriend’s daughters visiting for the day to play with Julia and spend some time away from her siblings, but by the end of the day though she was pretty bored. I also baked a chocolate cake, thinking another one of our friend’s was coming over for his birthday, but that didn’t work out. So, I had my girlfriend and her daughters over for dinner, but they didn’t take any cake! So, I decided Jon has to take the cake to work tomorrow and share the love with his co-workers.
Last night I worked out to my Wii Active game, and moved the settings up to high/hard. The end of each routine usually has a 2 minute run (in place), and I usually tap out around a minute and do a fast walk. Usually has something to do with the fact that the sensor isn’t reading my pace, and the game is telling me I’m going to slow. Well, something worked all together last night, and I was able to do the whole run without stopping. In fact, I could have kept going. Let me share something with you here. I HATE RUNNING. When I was much younger (and in shape) I did track, and of course it was probably my healthiest of times in life but I hated having to do the warm up run every day at practice. Once I stopped doing sports I dreaded ever having to go any faster then a fast walk. With knee injuries and lower back injuries I probably won’t ever become a die hard runner any time soon, if ever, but I am glad to see my mediocre accomplishment at this time.
Today I kept in the range of all my nutritional goals (calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, and sodium) except my darn sodium levels. Even with eating spaghetti for dinner, I managed to only have 1,851 calories today.

Loose Pants
Ladies, do you know when you put on a fresh from the laundry pair of jeans and they sure must have shrunk because they are as tight as can be? I always dealt with that with Jeans. I would have to lie down on the bed, suck in, and then be able to zip and button them. Today I pulled out my clean jeans with hesitation, knowing what was coming. I pulled them up my legs, and low and behold I didn’t need to even suck in to zip up and button my pants!
The most satisfying reward that comes to me through exercise and diet is my clothes beginning to fit looser. Not only are my tight jeans fitting looser, but my bras need to be tightened both around the bust and on the straps. But, of course I still have a new pair of jeans that I’m working towards fitting into.
As for dieting, today has not been as successful as I would like, but having a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean you always have to cook at home and eat exactly healthy all the time. I had Subway for lunch, which of course isn’t so bad on the calories, but the sodium levels are very high when it comes to bread and meats. For dinner my mom decided to buy us Chinese food for us. So I made some healthy choices when it came to this. I made sure to have smaller portions, and ordered steamed vegetables.
With all the high sodium I had today I made sure to workout enough, so I turned up my Wii Active to high intensity and went for a walk earlier on in the day. I really enjoyed having some of my favorite foods, and knowing that it’s ok to have them with the right choices.

Keeping the routine
I don’t have much to report on today, but would like to share my food journal and my workouts today. The wii Active was a rest day, so I took the time to use The Biggest Loser DVD and did 35 minutes of cardio. I also took a walk with Julia and my mom around town, but it wasn’t very far since we all needed a bathroom break. My goal is to maintain a 5 day a week exercise routine. So far, so good.

Grocery Shopping & Meal Planning
I am continuing to have hunger between meals, and I am running out of healthy snacks around the house. I suppose this means it’s time to go to the grocery store again. My philosophy about grocery shopping is to stay around the parameter of the store. Basically I like to have most of my items to be fresh foods, meats, dairy, and fresh breads. I buy my spices in bulk as well, it’s cheaper and you can have the amount you really need instead of an entire bottle. When I do go down the aisles I make sure to look at the labels and have low numbers across the board.
When shopping for my groceries I like to have a meal plan laid out for me with all the ingredients I’m going to need. If I don’t do this I end up having impulse buying, and not sticking to the right meals. Sometimes I don’t always put a day on each meal, but I like to know what I’m going to be cooking in the next week or more. This way, when that meal comes around I can stay on track and avoid going to the store when I’m hungry. The other benefit of doing this is that is budget conscious. Staying on track with a grocery list helps your wallet and your pant size.
Today I made sure to get extra exercise in because we were planning to have spaghetti for dinner. The last time we had said meal, I went over on my calories and felt very sluggish for it. So, I made sure to get my morning work out on the Wii and since we magically had no rain this afternoon I was able to take Julia and me for a walk around town. Of course, twenty minutes in it started sprinkling. Over all I was able to burn a couple hundred calories for the day.
Total Calorie: 1,958 Total Burned: 269
Breakfast: Oatmeal & Yogurt – 360
Snack: Blueberry Muffin – 180
Lunch: Grilled pork and cucumbers – 351
Snack: Blueberry Muffin – 180
Dinner: Spaghetti w/ meat sauce – 777
Snack: Popcorn - 110

Just another Manic Monday
My internal thoughts this morning during my workout went a little like this. “I hate this, I hate this, and I hate this.” Then, as my muscles woke up it went more like this. “I can do this, I can do this!” Then, as my muscles began to get tired it went like this. “I hate this, I hate this. Just get it done, and do as much as you can.”
A six am workout is a little rough on the mind and body. My eyes were still adjusting to the light, and my muscles were all stiff from my sleep. I hate Mondays! We managed to keep Julia asleep through the night, due to her pure exhaustion from the previous birthday party day, and I managed to haul myself out of bed at 5:45 am. Here’s a fun pictures of what the Wii Active looks like as I workout, and yes if you look closely it says I was going to slow. That would be the end of the workout, as I was telling myself to just get it over with.

Friday Night weight in
Well, I haven’t gained or lost any weight this week. There goes a plus side to the little devil on my shoulder as to why I don’t need to work out. On the other end of things I have received a lot of motivation from friends, and took a long walk at the mall today to make me feel extra energetic.
During the evening Jon and I experimented with using the Wii fit with Julia around. It wasn’t horrible, but if she hasn’t been tired and ready for her bottle it could have been better. At first she carried around the extra controllers, dancing along with the music, as well as raising her arms every time I did. She was very cute, but then it became more about wanting attention and needing a bottle. Overall, I got the work out in, and no harm done to our sleep for it.
My diet feels like it’s going well. Today I had some scrambled eggs, a whole wheat English muffin with low fat peanut butter, and a yogurt for breakfast. For lunch I had a large grilled chicken salad at Red Robin. We had a gift card to use up, so I also had some chips and salsa and guacamole. With such a large lunch, I wasn’t very hungry for dinner, so all I had was a small turkey burger.
BMI: 52.84 = up .11
So, I take the slight increase here as meaning water retention!

Need Encouragement Now!
This week has been extremely difficult. I was mentally and physically prepared for making changes in my life, and motivated to use the Wii for my workouts. What I didn’t expect was that my daughter was not on board with any life changes I needed to make. This whole week has been nothing but sleepless nights, and waking up in the middle of the night with a screaming child. The cry it out method may work to get the point across to her, but it does nothing for my sanity. I feel like the ultimate basket case.
For the most part my diet hasn’t suffered, except for the IV fluids of coffee I have ingested. I have maintained eating well, and not over eating during meals. I have slacked on my exercising, because I am so exhausted every day. And instead of making the exhaustion worse for both Jon and I, I have chosen to go to bed or sleep in instead of working out.
I imagine I can’t get down on myself to much for the extraneous circumstances, but I can’t help but feel like I have no motivation now. Outside of all the advice about sleeping children I have gotten, I really haven’t had a lot of support. My overworked husband has been at his wits-end with fatigue, and can’t muster up much encouragement either. So, I’m asking for all of you to tell me when was the last time you didn’t give up? When did you motivate yourself, and pulled yourself up out of the funk? I need the inspirational stories more now then ever.

Friday Night weight in
Tonight I completed my second workout. I turned up the intensity this time from easy to medium. I really have no idea why, and now that I sit here aching I am wondering why even more. My feet scream, my thighs are aching, and my arms are throbbing. Before hand I used the Wii fit to get my starting BMI. It had been 3 months since I had checked that, and cheerfully it tells me I had lost 8 lbs in that time. WOW!
During my workout tonight I struggled some, and had to stop a couple of time to get my barring. At one point I even walked away to shed some tears from my frustrations. It was during kick-backs, running on the track. I was suppose to do these damn kick-backs at fast pace and it just kept telling me I was to slow. I just wasn’t able to get it going any faster then I was going. On top of it I was feeling all my muscles straining to keep going. I took a second, and allowed myself the short melt down and went back to work. There was no reason why I couldn’t finish, so I did even when it wanted me to do them again!
Today I ate the doughnuts I confessed up to, some scrabbled eggs with ham; onions; and cheese along with a spoonful of hash browns. For snack during the rose bowl we had popcorn. Not exactly the smart choice since the sodium level is way high. And, for dinner I cooked up some chicken in garlic and tossed it over the left over salad we made that had spinach, tomato, broccoli, and red leaf lettuce. I’d have to say the choices we made were overall well today. Of course it will get better once I get to the store to get more food!
Today’s weigh in
BMI: 52.73

Officially the 1st Day
Wednesday I started my 30 day challenge on the Wii active game. I really wasn’t sure what to expect from it. It could have either been levels I had to complete as in the wii fit, or just a work out video. Well, it was really neither. I felt like I was really working out with a trainer, and it was amazingly fast paced.
It tells you the workouts are only going to take you 20 minutes, but it was more like 40 minutes with learning each exercise and changing between the wii board, the resistance band, and moving the num-chuck back in forth between my hand and leg strap. Jon was able to help me get the leg strap to fit around my leg as well, which also took a good 15 minutes into the workout. I had 16 exercises to complete for the day, and each worked out several areas of my body. Two cardio sessions in between the exercises, and today my feet are stinging from all the work. I feel all the muscles I used in that first day. I enjoy the pain though, and welcome the use of those muscles more. I am very pleased with the program so far.
As for the diet, I had a slow start off today. We got home late from the New Year’s Eve party we were at last night, so it was a slow start to our morning. No breakfast food in the house gave way to a trip to the store, but due to starving and cranky parents we stopped for doughnuts before hand. I have no qualms with the bad start since I only ate a salad for dinner last night. Unconsciously, I think I may have hyped this new lifestyle enough to begin changing my thinking. I feel the change in my thoughts already beginning, with smaller servings, and conscious thoughts about what I shouldn’t eat. (Not counting the doughnuts).
Tonight I’ll post my workout and food log, as well as the BMI from the wii fit. Each Friday will be my check in for my BMI/weight. Happy New Year everyone, and hope you all are enjoying the rose bowl. GO DUCKS!

My husband
So, yesterday I posted how my wonderful and loving husband sometimes encouraged from the couch with a coke in his hand. Well, apparently he was awfully insulted by this and I wanted to recant my statement. Jon is a wonderful and loving husband who ALWAYS supports me in whatever I do. He's even said he will help cook healthier meals, use the Wii fit, and we will both get healthier for our family.
Those who know Jon though know that he's only got about 20 lbs before his chiseled body returns. He was skinny all his life, and once he hit about 28 he had a harder time with some weight gain. BTW, he's only gone up one pant size since high school. LOL. He is the most amazing man, and will walk, run, skip, or jump next to me through this whole adventure.

Comments on Comments
It’s been very cathartic to share with all my friends about the pursuit. I’ve decided NOT to share the actual number of my weight until I am finished. I will share the BMI that the Wii fit gives me, which is uncomfortable enough.
I love the comments I have began to get from all of you. Remember to become a follower of the blog, so I know you are all reading along. For those of you who haven’t know me for long I want to share that I am a yo-yo weight looser. I know exactly what to do when it comes to exercise, eating right, and all the other aspects of weight lose. My problem though comes when I have overwhelming stress and I turn to my long time friend, food. I have hundreds of recipes to choose from, and I think the only thing I may be lacking is that gym membership with a personal trainer I had once upon a time.
Please continue to follow along the painful struggles of my weight lose, and please add your own stories along the way. Most of my comments have added in that they will join in on loosing their extra weight too, so let’s get moving!
On a side note, Jon and I will also being starting Financial Peace University from Dave Ramsey through our church. This is another life change we are making. Learning to budget and save our money more efficiently. Since I haven’t been working for over a year now our income and lifestyle have change hugely. I will comment some about our success with this undertaking along the way.
